His rich, mysterious barytone graces legion television and radiocommunication ads. His most creative work, however, is reserved for his "intelligence jazz," which marries melted, free association ruminations with gaudy instrumental backing. Active in radio since the fifties, he's recorded numerous albums and syndicated broadcasts, and has even collaborated with the Grateful Dead. Nordine got his start as a radiocommunication and video personality in Chicago, were he would sometimes do his raps over idle words records on his poetry show. His first-class honours degree News Jazz record album, from 1957, utilized the Chico Hamilton band (working under the alias of the Fred Katz chemical group). This lED to a serial of Parole Jazz recordings, which -- like the beat poetry from the same era -- looked beyond the conformance of the 1950s to more imaginative and colourful worlds, ones that had room for fancy and irrationality, and non just mundane reality. He's recorded sporadically of all time since, although he does studio recordings as a sideline to his work in wireless and commercials. Nordine's soundscapes ar best experient not on his relatively few commercial-grade recordings, simply on his syndicated radio set shows, 375 of which are uncommitted on cassette from Snail Records, Box 285-8C2, Florence, WI 54121. |
